Geoffrey C. Howes is Professor Emeritus of German at Bowling Green State University. He earned a PhD from the University of Michigan in 1985. He has published more than thirty articles on a wide range of topics in Austrian literature and culture. From 2000 to 2005, he was co-editor, with Jacqueline Vansant, of Modern Austrian Literature (now Journal of Austrian Studies). He has published translations of some forty authors, mostly Austrian, including books by Robert Musil, Peter Rosei, Jürg Laederach, and Gabriele Petricek. Between 2016 and 2019, he was a regular contributor of essays and translations to Versopolis. He was on the editorial staff of No Man’s Land, a journal for German-language literature in English, from 2016 to 2022. A member of the PEN Translation Committee, he was a judge for the 2020 PEN America Translation Prize. Since 2023 he has been contributing translations of Austrian poets to the online journal poesiegalerie.
