Four people work together to paint a public mural under a white canopy. The mural features abstract designs and pink flowers. A bold sign above reads, “ArtLords Public Mural.”.

ArtLords Public Mural

ArtLords, together with the vibrant New York City community, will ignite the PEN World Voices Festival with a powerful live mural-painting event celebrating freedom of expression and the transformative power of art.

This public artwork will unfold in real time as artists and community members come together to create a mural titled “Walls of Freedom: Art Against Silence.” The mural will reflect the resilient spirit of artists who continue to speak truth through creativity, even in the face of censorship, conflict, and repression.

Drawing inspiration from global stories of courage and resistance, the mural will weave together symbols of hope, justice, and solidarity. It will honor artists, writers, and cultural workers who use their voices and their art to defend freedom and dignity.

In the spirit of collective creativity, the public is warmly invited to participate. Art materials will be provided, and visitors will have the opportunity to add their own marks, messages, and colors to this evolving canvas.

Together, we will transform a wall into a shared statement of courage, creativity, and unity—demonstrating that art remains one of the most powerful tools for defending freedom and inspiring change.

The Unbannable Library—an interactive installation celebrating the freedom to read—will also take place in Union Square alongside the mural.
