People interact with colorful art panels outdoors under the heading Unbannable Library. Columns and trees are visible in the background, and several people are gathered around the display in a public space.

Unbannable Library (Washington Square Park)

The Unbannable Library comes to Washington Square as a vibrant public art installation celebrating the freedom to read. Created through collaborations between community groups, high schools, and artist/writer teams, these unique larger-than-life interactive books draw attention to the voices and stories most often subject to censorship. Visitors are invited to turn the giant pages, encounter new works of art and writing, and reflect on the importance of intellectual freedom in our libraries and communities.

Begun in 2023, the Unbannable Library now includes more than forty monumental books that stand together as a powerful statement against censorship and a celebration of the rich and varied voices of our community.

Taking place alongside the installation, the Indie Lit Fair will bring together independent presses and literary magazines for a lively outdoor celebration of small-press publishing.
