Thomas Page McBee

Thomas Page McBee is the author of the Lambda Award–winning debut memoir Man Alive, which was named a best book of the year by NPR Books, BuzzFeed, Kirkus, and Publishers Weekly. His follow-up, Amateur, was shortlisted for the UK’s Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction and the Wellcome Book Prize, named a best book of the year by many publications, and translated into multiple languages. In the course of reporting the book, Thomas became the first transgender man to fight in Madison Square Garden.

A writer/producer, Thomas’s screenwriting credits include The Umbrella Academy, where he architected and wrote the transition narrative for Elliot Page’s character, Viktor. That storyline was widely praised in the press, and the season was nominated for a GLAAD Award. His essays and reportage appear in The New York Times, The Atlantic, GQ, Esquire, Vanity Fair, and many other outlets, and his work has been longlisted in Best American Sports Writing, recognized by the North American Travel Journalists Association, and supported by residencies at MacDowell and Yaddo.

He is currently at work on a book about trans time and American histories (forthcoming from Scribner in 2027), as well as adapting Amateur for television. He lives outside Los Angeles with his wife and dogs.
