The last few years have seen an explosion of writing and screenwriting capturing the horrors of the world as it is and the horrors of the world to come. The demand for scary is closely connected to a collective desire for shared catharsis—amplified by the pandemic. Join Cherie Dimaline (Empire of Wild, The Marrow Thieves, FX’s Retreat), Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Velvet was the Night, Mexican Gothic) and Iain Reid (I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Foe, We Spread) as they discuss horror’s renaissance, its potency in a moment of global turmoil and social awakening, as well as adaptation from page to screen. The conversation will be moderated by Elamin Abdelmahmoud, culture writer at Buzzfeed News and author of the forthcoming memoir Son of Everywhere: A Memoir in Pieces.
Presented in association with the Consulate General of Canada.
