Elizabeth Levy

Elizabeth Levy is the author of over 100 fiction and non-fiction books for children. She is often lauded for treating serious issues with humor. From children’s series fiction, and chapter books, to young-adult novels and nonfiction, her works encompass a wide range of reading levels and genres. She has sold over five million books, and her books have been translated into many languages. She also enjoys teaching writing and she has held writing workshops all over the world.

Among her awards are Outstanding Book of the Year, New York Times, for Struggle and Lose, Struggle and Win: The United Mine Workers; Outstanding Science Book for Children, National Science Teachers Association, for Before You Were Three; My Life as a Fifth-Grade Comedian was named one of the 100 Best Books of 1997, New York Public Library, and on Bank Street’s list of Best Books. It also won the Maryland State Award, and Georgia Children’s Book Award, both 2000–01. Her two newest books, Bringing Down a President: The Watergate Scandal (2019) and Witch Hunt: The Cold War, Joe McCarthy and The Red Scare (April 2024) were written with Andrea Balis.

She graduated from Brown University and has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her first job was as a researcher for the American Broadcasting Company. In 1968, she worked on Robert F. Kennedy’s brief campaign for the President of the United States. Since then she has been a full-time writer, living in New York City.
